This (fortnightly, daytime) group looks at the development of architecture in England from pre-historic times to the present. If you are interested in the historic buildings we have surviving today whether they be churches, cathedrals, stately homes or the more humble domestic varieties and you enjoy visiting such buildings, then this group is for you.
The course will serve to help you understand the techniques and thought that went into the structures and their design and will, I believe, make your visits to such buildings more enjoyable. Past members have said how the course has made them look at buildings in a different and more enlightened way. We shall travel through Celtic, Roman, Saxon, Norman, Medieval, Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Arte Nouveau, Arte Deco, and Modern architecture and buildings. The format is through an illustrated lecture plus hand-out material. I can promise you a great deal of enjoyment and interest if you join the group.
During the period of Covid restrictions the group continues to study through emails sent out by the group convenor. In addition there are occasional illustrated lectures given on-line. Please contact the convenor if you are interested in joining the group.
